Oftentimes, what is presented as new technology is just a gimmick. The new LED light bulbs are a true innovation. They cost more, initially, but they last about 20 years and can save about 85% on energy costs. We'll tell you everything you need to know about these great new bulbs.
I have 6 60W bulbs in the ceiling fan fixtures in my office. I've averaged losing a bulb every two weeks for years. I don't know why. If I don't change it right away, then I have two or more out. The lights have a dimmer switch, so I can't install the longer lasting flourescent type bulbs. These CFL bulbs last up to 10,000 hours and save some energy, but there is a moment's lag when you first turn them on before they come on all the way. If I could have used them with my switch, I would have put up with the lag to significantly reduce the constant bulb changing.
The old style incandescent bulbs are all but gone due to legislation to reduce energy use. I wasn't sure just what to do. Then my local ACE hardware put their new LED bulbs on sale. They were relatively expensive, but they would work with my dimmer switch, so I purchased six bulbs to give them a test. That was 8 months ago and I haven't replaced a single bulb, in fact, I'm not confident that I will see years of service from these bulbs.
My old bulbs used 60 watts of energy, the new ones use only 9.7 watts to produce roughly the same light (the led's are actually brighter). The energy savings are amazing. Another big plus is that they don't produce all the heat of the old bulbs which reduces the load on my air conditioner.
The only drawback to LED bulbs is the initial cost. Today's non sale price at ACE hardware is 2 bulbs for $15.99. It takes about 18 months of energy savings to 'break even' on the higher purchase price, however, you will pocket the difference for years to come. Like most people, I simply couldn't afford to purchase all the bulbs for my home at once. So I watch the ads from the major outlets: ACE, Wal-Mart, Lowes and more and find them on sale for a significantly lower price. Every time they go on sale I purchase some.
I'm happy knowing that I'm being a responsible citizen and conserving energy. I'm glad that my electric bill is lower. But I'm thrilled that I'm no longer changing bulbs every week or two and won't have to for years to come.
