As we get older, most things in our lives change, to some degree. Our dental health and needs are no exception. There is no reason why our teeth can't remain just as healthy as ever, we just need to pay attention to things that, perhaps, weren't a concern in years past. Dr. Eiler provides full family dental services in her clinic in North Little Rock and was kind enough to share some thoughts to help us protect and preserve our teeth and smiles and allow us to age gracefully.
Aging Population and dentistry
Gum Recession: Gums recede as we age, exposing the root surfaces of teeth that are not covered in protective enamel. These surfaces are more susceptible to decay, and coupled with dry mouth that can occur as a side effect of increased use of prescription medications as we age, can lead to rapid decay. Regular dental care and exams are crucial to dental health. With regular, focused care, gum recession can be minimalized and modern procedures can actually correct some of the damage already caused.
Dry mouth: We tend to require more prescription medications as we age. Many of these medicines can cause dry mouth as a side effect. Saliva bathes our teeth to help wash away food particles and is a source of minerals that helps to remineralize our teeth. When saliva flow is decreased, our teeth are more vulnerable to decay. Frequent water drinking, and chewing gum sweetened with xylitol can help prevent decay. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener that has been proven to actually help combat tooth decay. Gum brands such as Icebreakers and Trident White, among many others, contain xylitol.
Tooth wear: Tooth wear from normal functioning and from tooth grinding occurs throughout our lives. After many years of this wear, we can see the effects such as flattening and shortening of teeth, broken teeth, and damaged dental work. Tooth wear can be so severe that the face begins to appear shortened. These effects can be prevented early on by being fitted by your dentist for a mouth guard to wear at night to protect the teeth. If the teeth are already damaged, a dentist can repair it with fillings or crowns to bring proper function and beauty to your smile.
Tooth loss: Even with our best efforts, sometimes teeth must be lost. Losing a tooth can affect your appearance negatively, but most importantly, it can prevent you from being able to properly chew and digest food. Many options are available to patients for replacing teeth, depending on the location of the missing tooth and the number of teeth that are missing. Dental implants, bridges, partials, and dentures, can all be instrumental in allowing you to chew properly and enjoy your smile again.
Regular dental care is important throughout our lives but becomes even more critical as we age to extend the life of our teeth. At Eiler Family Dentistry, our team would love to meet you and help you to create and keep your smile as beautiful and healthy as ever.
