Smoke detectors have been a part of American homes for many years, however, there is a much less common detector that is at least as important.
We've all read stories in the newspaper about entire families killed in a home fire and the deaths could have been prevented by the use of a simple smoke detector. It is a true tragedy every time it happens if for no other reason than knowing it was so easily preventable. Fortunately, these reports are much more infrequent now, largely due to the public becoming more informed and the declining costs of the detectors.
However, we are seeing more and more reports of deaths by carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a clear, odorless gas which is a by product of combustion. It is present, in high concentrations, is auto exhause as well as the exhaust of fire places, water heaters, space heaters and home heater units. Most of these devices are properly vented, however, sometimes something can happen to constrict the venting and the dangerous gas can build in the home.
The solution is exactly as simple as for smoke. There are now simple, inexpensive monoxide detectors for the home. A new single detector that will protect your family from smoke and monoxide levels is available for as low as $30 from virtually any home or department store. If you don't already have several, it should be on your list of things to do TODAY!
