The basics of auto maintenance have changed drastically over the years. At one time, spark plugs had to be changed every 5,000 miles. Now, for many cars, that has increased to 100,000 miles. There have been tremendous technological advances in fuel economy, tires and almost every aspect of your car. Motor oil is no exception. It's not glamorous, but it is one of the most important factors in preserving the large investment you have made in your car. Find out the latest, it might just make a difference.
Changing the oil in your car regularly is essential. As oil breaks down, gets contaminated or gets dirty it can no longer properly lubricate the internal parts of your engine and those parts begin to wear. How often you need to change your oil depends on a number of factors; your car, your driving habits, local conditions and the oil you use.
The first thing you need to do is check your owners manual. It only takes a minute and you'll know the recommended intervals for your car. This is still somewhat general if your car is 10 years old or more. Motor oils are infinately better than they were, even a few years ago. Oil and air filters are much more effective at keeping dirt out of your system. Most newer cars recommend changing oil between 5,000 and 7,500 miles depending on conditions. However, when most service providers change your oil, they place a small sticker on the windsheild with a reminder for your next oil change. They typically use 3000 miles as their basis. Unfortunately, this is a ruse. It's to their benefit for you to return sooner and more often than necessary. It doesn't hurt your car to change more often, but it does hurt your pocketbook and it dramatically increases the wastes dumped into the environment and doesn't provide any benefit to your car.
In addition to the improvements to the oil and filters, the use of unleaded fuels and computer controlled fuel injection systems signficantly reduce the contaminants that are introduced into the oil. There is rarely a need to change your oil in fewer than 5,000 miles. There is usually a time factor associated with the mileage. Typically 6 months for a 5,000 mile schedule. This is because exposure to air will begin to break oil down even in the absence of mileage. Often those who don't drive many miles make numerous trips of very short duration. The short trips ( 5 miles or less) don't allow the engine to fully warm and increased the condensation and pollutants in the oil and require the oil to be changed.
Oil is much cheaper than replacing an engine. It's to your advantage to change it regularly, it far cheaper in the long run. However, changing the oil at only half it's serviceable lifetime produces absolutely no benefit to you, your car or the environment.
