For a mere fifteen cents you can purchase one of the world's most versatile foods. Ramen noodles. Many a college student survived their educational years because ramen noodles were so cheap, quick to fix and required only a hot plate and no skill to prepare.
I purchased my first package with the deposit from soft drink bottles I returned ( I was REALLY poor ). I cooked them 'as is' with only the flavor packet (included) and thought it was a real feast.
Now that bottles don't have deposits (and I'm not quite as poor), why would I want to return to such a lowly staple? Because they're delicious and can be prepared in literally thousands of different ways. Here are just a few of the ways you can use these simple noodles to become a kitchen hero.
Salads can be a great meal, especially when it's so hot outside. Simply cook the noodles following package directions and then rinse to cool. Mix with your choice of greens, nuts, seeds or fruits and you can have a great lunch in moments.
A stir fry can be simple, or completly gourmet. Your call! Simply stir fry your favorite veggies, add some leftover beef, pork, chicken or shrimp and then mix in your cooked noodles. A little soy sauce or garlic and you're done in ten minutes or less. This is not just good, it's great.
Soups can be filling, flavorful yet light at the same time. A great brothy soup can use the flavors of the orient, mexico, the pacific islands or wherever you wish by just changing a few ingredients and a couple of spices. Fish, shrimp or any meat can enhance it or you can keep it all veggie.
Ramen noodles are also great uncooked. They can be broken into small pieces and sprinkled on salads and other dishes to provide a delicious crunch.
A quick Google search for 'ramen noodle recipes' will yield literally thousands of ideas. If you're on a budget, in a hurry and especially if your meals seem in a bit of a rut, consider these noodles as a lifeline.
