A great way to increase the functionality and enjoyment of your home is by incorporating some of your outdoor space into usable space for you and your family. Even with very modest investments of time and money, you can add a whole new dimension to your life. Over the next few issues, we will take an in depth look at some of the many options that are available, from simple decks or patios to outdoor kitchens and semi-enclosed areas. While there is no way to discuss all of the options, hopefully we can provide you with the basic information that will assist you in discovering the perfect enhancement for your lifestyle.
Even a tiny deck or patio will provide you with an opportunity to get outside, away from the television and distractions. There’s room for a chair and a small table where you can escape with a good book and enjoy some much deserved ‘me time’.
The first step is evaluating your lifestyle and needs. Do you want to entertain? Do you want to create an intimate area for a group or space where multiple groups can form? Do you want outdoor cooking to be a part of the experience, or perhaps even the main focus? Do you need a space that is equally functional at night as it is during the day?
It would be senseless to install a pre-designed deck that didn’t fit the dimensions of your house when a little bit of planning could produce a perfect fit. It is even more important to ensure that your design fits your lifestyle needs. It would be counterproductive to build a deck with space for only a small grill if outdoor cooking is an important part of your life. Make a list of your needs and wishes and discuss them with your deck designer. Together, you will be able to create a perfect environment.
A recent client had to replace his crumbling deck while he was replacing his siding. His deck was home to his gas grill which he used 15 – 20 times a year. Otherwise, the deck was unused. His wife wanted to eliminate the deck, but due to the slope of the back yard and drainage issues, a patio was not practical. Richard, our deck designer, worked with the client and together they designed a deck with a built in bench around the perimeter, a portable bench for his grill as well as an exterior power outlet, multiple flood lights, portable planter boxes for herbs and a small table for food going on or off the grill. There was also space for him to add an electric smoker. What was once an eyesore is now an important and functional part of their lifestyle. They have entertained more in the last year that they had the previous twenty years, combined.
Our next newsletter will delve into the nuts and bolts of deck construction. We will help you make sense of all of the choices available in decking materials. We will discuss the differences between wood and composite materials and provide you with the information you will need to make an informed decision.
